Moz to Semrush: what transfers and what does not

A practical account of switching between the two platforms — which data you can carry across, which metrics are not comparable, and why the SEOmoz name still shows up in search.

A Moz to Semrush migration — A Moz to Semrush migration is the process of moving rank tracking, link research and reporting from Moz Pro to Semrush. Keyword lists and Search Console connections carry across. Rank history, link index data and proprietary authority scores do not, because each platform builds them from its own independently maintained index.

The SEOmoz question, answered directly

A steady trickle of searches uses the phrase “Moz to SEOmoz migration”. There is no such thing, and it is worth saying plainly rather than building a page that pretends otherwise.

SEOmoz and Moz are the same company. It launched as SEOmoz, and rebranded to Moz in 2013 when the product line grew past search alone. No product moved anywhere. There is nothing to migrate between the two names.

What people searching that phrase almost always want is one of two things: how to move off Moz onto another platform, or reassurance that a tool they remember by its old name still exists. This page covers the first. The second is answered above.

What actually carries across

Two things transfer cleanly.

Keyword lists. Plain text out of Moz, plain text into Semrush Position Tracking. The keywords come across reliably. Tags and groupings usually do not, so budget time to rebuild the organizational structure by hand.

Search Console and analytics connections. These are Google’s data, not the vendor’s, so reconnecting the property gives you a continuous series regardless of which platform you view it through. This is the single most useful fact on this page for anyone designing reporting.

Everything else is a fresh start. Rank history, link data and every proprietary score belong to the platform that produced them.

Why the authority numbers cannot be compared

Domain Authority is a Moz model trained on Moz’s link index. Authority Score is a Semrush model built on Semrush’s index. They correlate loosely because both attempt to estimate the same underlying thing, and they disagree specifically because the inputs and the formulas differ.

Charting them as one series produces a line with a step in it that means nothing, and someone will eventually explain that step as a real event — a penalty, a link loss, a competitor move. That misreading is the actual cost of not documenting the switch.

The fix is a single annotation on the switch date and a restated baseline. Ten minutes of work that saves a genuinely confused quarterly review.

The parallel month

The most useful thing you can do costs one extra subscription month.

Run both platforms for a full reporting cycle. During that window both are measuring the same reality, so the difference between them is measurable rather than assumed. You end up able to say “Semrush reports our authority roughly X points below Moz for this domain” instead of guessing.

It is also the only way to distinguish a configuration error from a genuine index difference. If the parallel period shows a consistent gap, it is index difference. If it shows an erratic one, check the location and device settings — that is nearly always what it turns out to be.

This page makes no recommendation

Which platform is better is not a question this page answers, because the honest answer depends on what you use it for and no page selling a service should pretend otherwise.

What is worth saying: the switching cost is mostly reporting continuity, and that cost is almost entirely avoidable with an export, a parallel month and an annotation. Teams who plan those three steps barely notice the change. Teams who cancel first spend a quarter explaining a chart.

The general tool migration page covers the same method for any platform pairing, and if you arrived here looking for website migration work, that is a different service entirely.

Mapping of Moz Pro metrics to their nearest Semrush counterparts, with a note on whether the two are directly comparable.
Moz metric Nearest Semrush equivalent Directly comparable? How to handle it
Domain Authority (DA) Authority ScoreNoDifferent models on different link indexes. Rebaseline; never chart across the switch.
Page Authority (PA) Page-level Authority ScoreNoSame problem at page level. Use it for relative comparison inside one platform only.
Spam Score Toxicity ScoreNoDifferent signals and thresholds. Re-review any disavow decisions rather than porting them.
Linking domains Referring domainsPartiallySame concept, different indexes. Expect a step change and document it.
Keyword Difficulty Keyword DifficultyNoSame name, different formula. Reset any internal thresholds built on the old scale.
Rankings Position TrackingPartiallyCheck location and device settings first — most apparent changes come from configuration.
Site Crawl issues Site Audit issuesNoDifferent rule sets and severity models. Run a fresh baseline rather than comparing counts.
Moz and Semrush metric equivalents

When this page helps

  • You are evaluating or executing a move from Moz Pro to Semrush.
  • Reporting built on Moz metrics needs to survive the change.
  • A Moz subscription is expiring and the data has not been exported.
  • Someone asked why the domain authority number changed after the switch.

When it does not

  • You are keeping both platforms — nothing needs reconciling.
  • You use neither for trend reporting, only for ad-hoc keyword research.
  • You are migrating a website rather than a toolset.
  • You want a recommendation on which platform is better. This page does not make one.

The switch, in order

Roughly a week of elapsed time, most of it waiting for a parallel period to accumulate. The active work is a few hours.

  1. 01

Export Moz campaign data while the account is live

Rankings history, keyword lists, linking domains, top pages and any custom reports. Access typically ends on cancellation, so this is not a last-day task.

    Output Dated CSV archive

  2. 02

Record current DA, PA and Spam Score values

Snapshot the numbers for your domain and your main competitors. This is your only future reference for what the old scale said.

    Output Baseline metric snapshot

  3. 03

Set up the Semrush project with matched settings

Same keyword list, same locations, same devices. Configuration mismatch causes more apparent ranking movement than any real difference between the platforms.

    Output Configured Position Tracking project

  4. 04

    Reconnect Search Console and analytics

This is the data that carries across intact, so reconnecting it early re-establishes a continuous series regardless of what the vendor metrics do.

    Output Connected data sources

  5. 05

Run both for one full reporting cycle

One month of overlap gives you a period where both platforms measured the same reality. It is the only calibration you will get.

    Output Parallel-period delta

  6. 06

Rewrite reporting and annotate the change date

Restate any target that was set against a Moz metric, and annotate the switch in every dashboard so the step is explained where people will see it.

    Output Updated reporting with annotations

Questions people ask before starting

Is SEOmoz the same as Moz?

Yes. The company launched as SEOmoz and rebranded to Moz in 2013, dropping "SEO" from the name as the product line broadened. There is no separate SEOmoz product and no migration between the two — searches for "SEOmoz migration" are almost always about moving off Moz to another platform.

Does my Domain Authority transfer to Semrush?

No. Domain Authority is a Moz metric calculated on Moz's link index. Semrush's Authority Score is a different model built on a different index. The numbers will not match and should never be charted as one series. Rebaseline and move on.

Can I import my Moz keyword lists into Semrush?

Yes. Keyword lists are plain text and export cleanly as CSV, then import into Semrush Position Tracking. Check the groupings and tags separately — the keywords come across reliably, the organizational structure around them usually needs rebuilding by hand.

Why did my rankings change the day I switched?

Almost always configuration rather than reality. Check that location, device and language settings match your old Moz campaign first. After that, residual difference is normal: the two platforms sample search results at different times from different places.

Will my backlink count drop in Semrush?

It may go up or down, and either way it reflects index difference rather than links gained or lost. The two crawlers find overlapping but different sets of links. Record the number on switch day as a new baseline and compare forward from there.

Should I re-run my disavow decisions?

Review them rather than port them. Moz Spam Score and Semrush Toxicity Score use different signals and thresholds, so a link flagged by one may not be flagged by the other. Given how narrow the legitimate use for disavow is, a fresh review is worth the hour.
